Sprint
Race 1 (5:35pm)
"Setup" show superstar Kent showed how its done when he ripped off
a ridiculous 1:11.589 in Jeff's #19 transformed track monster in the
1st sprint race. Pro driver Tony did the best he could to keep up
and ended up with a fast time of 1:13:513. 2 seconds off. Damn. This
was going to be a hard fight for #23 to keep up in the night enduro.
Round 1 to Jeff/Cliff/Kent team. 15
Sprint Race 2 (8:15pm)
Dan Vs Jeff. This was the 1st heads up race between the Sturlas and
it was an epic battle. When the green flag dropped, it was awesome
to see the 2 EGs take off on the front straight. Dan was thinking
he had to drive hard early to pass his brother otherwise Jeff will
open too much of a gap. Lap 2. Done. Dan passes Jeff and goes on to
open a good gap. It was going well. Dan ripped off a fast time of
1:13.958 in lap 9. Then electrical gremlins showed up in lap 10. The
car shut down on the front straight and continued to give Dan problems
the rest of the race. Jeff got around Dan to take the checker while
Dan limped #23 home. Jeff got fast lap of 1:14.203 on lap 15. Round
2 again to Jeff/Cliff/Kent team. It was a scramble to find out why
#23 is having issues now. Criz along with the support crew went to
work. Changing out distributors to checking spark plugs to changing
ECUs. By the end of it, only the ECU was swapped out. We crossed our
fingers and sent both cars out to the starting grid.
Night
Enduro (11:45pm)
#19 Jeff/Cliff/Kent team starts 7th #23 Dan/Merv/Tony team starts
8th Both Jeff and Tony took the start and ran nose to tail the entire
time with Jeff leading the whole stint. Fast lap for Jeff came on
lap 13 with a 1:14.201 - matching his sprint race times in the day
time. When Jeff came in for his 1st pit stop on lap 14, Tony started
ripping off some super fast times. He achieves a 1:12.812 in lap 16.
Faster in the dark than he went during the day time!! This boy can
drive. Cliff takes over driving duties and maintains consistent lap
times in the 1:17s (fast lap 1:17.157). Tony comes in on lap 29 and
I take over driving duties. Cliff pitted around the same time for
Kent to take over. It took a few laps for me to get comfortable and
I started to push the car. #23 was a joy to drive. It felt strong
and grip levels were good. Handling was great! I made sure to check
oil pressures everytime I got on the straight and it was holding steading.
Water temp in the 210s. I got my fast lap in the middle of my stint
with a 1:14.639. I saw the signal to come in on lap 48. Time for the
anchor driver Dan to take us to the checker. Meanwhile Kent was on
track doing a long stint. Fast stint too with fast time of 1:13.129.
Then it happened again. Dan's car shut down on him on the straight.
Nooo!!! He was able to fire the car up but had to limit to 70% throttle
the most of his stint. When the white flag came out, we hoped to see
Dan come around tower turn and he does! In fact Dan came out blazing
setting fast lap of 1:14.288 in the 2nd to last lap of the race. Kent
set his 2nd fastest lap of his long stint (35 laps) in the last lap
with a 1:13.141!! In the end, Dan/Merv/Tony in #23 came away with
the team battle win with 62 laps vs Jeff/Cliff/Kent with 61 laps.
Man, that was a great night. Another annual LBR tradition in the books.
Thanks to all that showed up and thanks to Wato for cooking up a great
meal. Kart took some amazing pics and I'll be ordering some shots
from him!! Want to give a shout out to Justin for getting his car
out and fixing it in time for the enduro. But his alternator failed
on him halfway in the race. David Bahr didn't even get his stint in
Next year buddy!
